Happy New Year! What’s Your Songwriting Resolution? Commit to It Here!

New Year Fireworks 2011

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all you Songwriters out there – we wish you a creative and successful 2011!

Have you made a Songwriting New Year’s Resolution yet? If you have made one, let us know below – we’d love to know what everyone is committing to. You can either do a regular comment or we have now enabled Facebook commenting.

If you are looking for suggestions, how about: “To do 10 minutes of songwriting every day in 20111″?

It doesn’t sound like much but a little songwriting done often is much more effective than a lot of songwriting done only every once in a while. If you can keep it up, it will really help you improve the songs that you write.

Some tips for keeping your 10 min songwriting resolution:

  • Have a fixed time every day for your songwriting 10 mins. It then becomes a habit and hence much easier to stick to.
  • First thing every morning is an ideal time. How about just setting your alarm clock 10 mins earlier?
  • If you do end up missing a day, don’t feel like you’ve failed with your resolution and then give up. Just pick up again the next day and then carry on.
  • If you are going to go ahead with this, leave your commitment as a comment below. It will then feel more real – you’ve now committed to it!

Leave your resolutions (either ours or your own) as comments below…

Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

RR

My New Year’s resolution is to get all the songs I’ve written and compile them all together! I’ve written songs over the past 10 years and with recently moving, they’re in various places. I hope to get at least one of them publish or produced and on an MP3 that I can share with others!!! Curretly, they are just lyrics, but the meolodies for each are all in my head. Since I’m not a soloist, or can’t play an instrument, they are just songs (lyrics on paper) to encourage others.
Praying that this happens!! Thanks for having a site like this to link with other writers!! :)

This year I’m going to write down some more of my ideas and actually try to finish a song. It’s something I’ve never managed before, so would be an achievement for me.

  3. Bruce says:

My resolution is to be more productive. I’m in the “put my all into every song – rewrite, rewrite, rewrite until (what I perceive as) perfect” camp. It’s hard to change though. Any advice from anyone on techniques that might help?

  4. Hi Majewi – good luck with the song :-)

I have lot of studies..u know i think about the song i wana write a few days and then pen it..it goes easy rather than taking the pen with nothing to write down… I believe its a talent

I havent wrote but i want to write something tomorrow…some funny song..u may cry..hah

  7. Thanks, Rav! I’m hoping that 3/month puts me somewhere in the middle as well…

  8. Hi Mandy,

    50 completed songs last year – I’m impressed :-)

Some songwriters go for quantity hoping to find that pearl amongst the grit, others go for quality putting their all into every song, doing many rewrites etc. Most people are somewhere between the two extremes. 3 completed songs a month is still a great achievement.

    Good luck :-)

  9. Hi Howard,

Completing 1 song a week is a great goal. How many partly finished songs do we all have lying around lol ;-)

  10. I’m hoping to write 3 songs a month. Last year, I wrote 50 songs total… But my process of writing and rewriting has gotten a bit more involved, so I’m giving it more time. This means less overall total, but I’m aiming for an improved quality!

  11. I already write every day. My 2 resolutions for this year: Complete 1 song a week; Copyright each song and register with ASCAP. (Is that 3?)

  12. Well done Erin – yes maybe 3 days or 5 days per week is more realistic than 7 days a week.

  13. I have a date with my muse three mornings a week at 5 AM. So far, we’ve been faithful to each other. ;-)
