Live Twitter Songwriting Exercise: Chorus from a Photo

Today’s Live Twitter Songwriting Exercise is “Songwriting from a Photograph”

You will be writing a SONG CHORUS based upon the photo on this page. Please read the instructions fully before continuing – there’s no rush… :-)

Instructions:

1. Properties of a Chorus

  • A chorus is usually based around the language of thoughts and feelings
  • It summarises the song and is repeated several times within the song
  • It is the most memorable part of the song – the part that you want people to sing along to
  • It contains the song’s title – which is often repeated within the chorus to get people to remember it
  • The most powerful positions for the title within the chorus are the first or last lines (or both)

2. Analyse the Photo…

  • Look at the photograph. What is happening here? Who is the girl? Don’t just jump to obvious conclusions. There are many possible interpretations of this photo.
  • What is the story behind this photo?
  • What is the girl thinking and feeling? What emotions she is going through?
  • Who are the other people involved in this story and what are they thinking and feeling?

3. Decide Upon a Title for Your Song

  • This should be fairly short and memorable
  • It should summarise what the song is about
  • Don’t be afraid to repeat the title in the chorus

4. Write You Chorus

  • You are going to have to fit your chorus into a single tweet (140 chars!) so it’s going to have to be quite short
  • Separate the lines of your chorus with commas
  • You will need to put #SongEx on the end of the tweet so that people can see it (#SongEx Hashtag)
  • It’s fine to use abbreviations as long as people can still understand

5. Send out your chorus on Twitter

  • DON’T send it to us – just send it as a general tweet
  • DON’T forget to put #SongEx on the end of your tweet – or nobody will see it!
  • DON’T write a long chorus and split it up into several tweets – the fun of this is the creativity that comes out when you are faced with a severe restriction like this
  • DO enter several times if you want to – as long as it is with totally different choruses each time
  • ABOVE ALL – Have Fun! :-)

We will retweet (RT) as many entries as we can and then over the weekend we will post all entries to this website.

LET THE SONGWRITING BEGIN!

Sorry its meant to read ‘a fort built around her being’

  3. manollomuse says:

    When I come to close
    She becomes comatose
    From an overdose
Of some bad love I suppose
Her heart calcified from the bleed
Now there’s a stone where it should be
A for built around her being
Echoes of pain’s sound for seeing
    There’s damage done to repair
She needs a spark with some air
She needs a gun with a flare

I guess its not a chorus but a verse. I struggle with chorus’ but do well with refrains.
